Service as Action
We see World Changing Power
Learning through service is the heart of what we do at Merici as a Catholic school. In the Middle Years Programme (MYP), students are required to engage with opportunities for Service as Action, which seeks to develop students as caring members of the community who act to make a positive difference in the lives of others and their environment.

Service as Action in the MYP links to all subjects studied throughout Year 7-10 and encourages students to see the real-world applications of the curriculum. Students are challenged to act in their local communities, consider social and environmental justice, and engage with global issues. Students might share their language learning with local primary schools, raise funds for environmental organisations or connect with students from international partner schools.
Each year students have a theme and focus for their Christian Service-Learning Programme, facilitated in their Religion classes. The highlight of this Programme is Service Week in Year 10, where students volunteer with a community organisation.
Learning Outcomes
There are seven learning outcomes for Service as Action, which students demonstrate and reflect on throughout the MYP.
Students will:
- become more aware of own strengths and areas for growth
- undertake challenges that develop new skills
- discuss, evaluate and plan student-initiated activities
- persevere in action
- work collaboratively with others
- develop international-mindedness through global engagement, multilingualism and intercultural understanding
- consider the ethical implications of their actions.
